Volunteer Coordinator (part-time temporary)

COASST (Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team ­ www.coasst.org)  is a citizen science project dedicated to involvement and action,  using marine birds as environmental indicators.  With beaches  throughout the coastal areas of the North Pacific, COASST volunteers  provide long-term baseline data on seabird beaching, used to assess  the patterns and causes of seabird mortality.  More than 600 trained  volunteers now monitor over 300 sites in coastal Washington, Oregon,  California, and Alaska.  COASST believes that coastal residents know  and care about their local resources and can be called upon to collect  high quality data on nearshore ecosystem health.  At the same time,  COASST is dedicated to analyzing and reporting data to facilitate the  translation of our long-term monitor database into effective marine  conservation solutions.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a part-time temporary Volunteer  Coordinator to be responsible for maintaining daily operations of the  COASST office including but not limited to:
• Recruiting junior and senior undergraduate student interns to COASST on a quarterly basis
• Managing the COASST phone
• Managing the COASST email account (back-up for senior interns)
• Set-up, management and participation of/in quarterly volunteer calls
• Managing junior interns, including running a weekly meeting and quarterly weekend field trip
• Managing senior interns (in association with Program Coordinator)
• Logistics for COASST trainings and socials (all conducted off-site)
• Follow-through on new volunteers after trainings (initial contact, site assignment, forms and contract received, volunteer kit delivered, new information entered into database)
• Conducting trainings and attending socials
• Maintaining the COASST office cookbook
• Maintaining content pages on the COASST website
• Working with the Program Coordinator to maintain office work flow
 
In general, this position will spend approximately 60% of total time worked on office tasks including managing interns, 20% of time on trainings and socials, and 20% on special projects as assigned.  Examples of the latter might include putting together data or 
information for the Annual Report, putting together materials for presentations by the Executive Director.
 
Competitive candidates will be flexible, organized, highly motivated, and independent team players.  Inherent to success in this position is possession of a genuine interest in applying knowledge and research experience to advance citizen science and specifically coastal marine conservation.   Success in this position will be assessed by the timely processing of new and current volunteer information and data through the COASST office, maintenance of a high retention rate of COASST volunteers, maintenance of a high percentage of COASSTers delivering data monthly, and personal ability to recruit new COASSTers during trainings.
 
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology or related field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of birds (may include courses taken, field experience, and/or other experience).
• Demonstrated teaching, communication, and/or outreach experience.
• Advanced use of Word and Excel (e.g., can use pivot table, filtering, and basic statistical functions).
• Ability to work occasional nights and weekends on short notice, especially in the late spring through early fall.
• Ability to lift/move up to 60 pounds.

• Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
 
Desired:
• Knowledge of the natural history and identification of marine birds (seabirds, shorebirds, and waterfowl).
• Data manipulation/analysis skills.
• Website content management experience.
• Social skills to tackle even the most difficult and awkward of situations (i.e., a resource manager who needed data yesterday, a funder who is not returning calls, a disgruntled volunteer) with wit, grace, and aplomb.

Research Consultant (part-time temporary)

We have an outstanding opportunity for a part-time temporary Research  Consultant position (estimated 10 hours per week).  This individual  will be responsible for independent verification of COASST volunteer  bird identifications.  This position will spend a minimum 80% of total  time worked on verification of COASST data using a combination of  volunteer-collected measurements, plumage categorizations, and  photographs; and up to 20% on special data projects associated with  the COASST bird data, as assigned.  Examples of the latter might  include queries for the Annual Report, grant reports, and/or  publications and presentations.

Competitive candidates will be flexible, organized, highly motivated,  and independent team players.  Inherent to success in this position is  possession of a genuine interest in applying knowledge and research  experience to advance citizen science and specifically coastal marine  conservation.   Success in this position will be assessed by the speed 
and accuracy of records verified, relative to senior staff members  (Program Coordinator) who conduct the same work.
 
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology or related field.
• Advanced use of Word and Excel (e.g., can use pivot table, filtering, and basic statistical functions).
• Advanced knowledge of bird, and seabird, identification (as demonstrated within the resume and on in-person testing, if  interviewed).
• Ability to work in the COASST office (at least initially) in large time blocks (e.g., minimum of 5 hours).
• Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration

Mid-level Botanist/ Plant Ecologist

Description: The successful candidate will participate in the following areas, but not limited to: botanical surveys (special-status plant species, noxious weeds and invasive non-native plants); plant community classification and inventory, and habitat/association mapping; land and resource management planning; restoration plantings; environmental impact analysis and client-agency interactions for regulatory compliance/ permitting; and proposal development, project/task management (i.e., scope, schedule, budget, and quality), and client relationships management. Requirements: Master’s degree (or equivalent years of experience) in applicable field (botany, plant ecology, range ecology, environmental biology, or related biological science discipline), with a minimum of 3 years of direct experience in botanical resources-related environmental impact assessments, mitigation/monitoring plans, and botanical field surveys. Regional work experience in the terrestrial ecosystems of the Northwest and/or Pacific States essential; experience in wetland delineation/ assessment and mitigation design/monitoring highly desired. Senior NEPA Project Manager

Senior NEPA Project Manager, Bellevue, WA

TEC Inc., an employee owned, international consulting firm, seeks a Senior NEPA Project Manager for our Bellevue, WA office.  This individual will provide overall and day-to-day NEPA project management including strategic development of an environmental planning practice.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in project management and technical analysis associated with environmental planning and NEPA.

·         He/she will serve as the technical lead in the development of proposal strategy and bid materials.

·         He/she will provide oversight analysis for preparation and maintenance of project schedules and budgets and approach to technical issues.

·         He/she will be responsible for managing and leading the preparation of various environmental documents, including environmental assessments, environmental impact statements, initial studies, negative declarations, and environmental impact reports pursuant to NEPA and other environmental regulations.

  • He/she will serve as a primary point of contact with clients and sub-consultants and act as a technical adviser on NEPA environmental projects, provide peer review comments on documents, serve as strategic adviser on complex projects, and serve as a technical resource to internal and external clients.

Requirements

·         BA/BS or higher degree in environmental planning, environmental science, or a related field

·         10 years of pertinent experience with NEPA and environmental planning.

·         5 years project management experience, including experience as a project manager for at least one environmental impact statement.

·         Minimum 2 years experience conducting environmental planning for Department of Defense Navy or Air Force, Coast Guard, or civilian Federal agency projects. 

·         Experience with Washington SEPA a plus.

·         Excellent written and verbal communication and strong organization and management skills are a must along with proficiency in Microsoft Office. Occasional travel or involvement in field effort should be anticipated.

SHN Consulting Engineers & Geologists, Inc. is seeking a CEQA expert for a Consulting Biologist/ Project Manager position in our Eureka, CA regional office. Consulting Biologists at SHN will prepare, oversee and manage large and complex CEQA/NEPA environmental compliance documents and permitting projects for any of a range of clients including federal, state, and local agencies; and act as a technical advisor and consultant for natural resources, permitting & planning, and environmental issues. You are a good fit for our position if have experience developing and sustaining client relationships and interfacing with engineering design teams on environmental permit requirements; developing conceptual and final habitat restoration plans; preparing and reviewing proposals and budgets; managing projects to meet financial targets; and preparing technical reports specific to botanical and biological resource impact analysis in support of CEQA and NEPA documents.

Qualifications:

*A minimum of 6 years hands-on-experience managing environmental projects including CEQA/ NEPA documentation, regulatory compliance and technical studies

*A solid understanding of western United States flora and wildlife with emphasis on northern California

*B.S. Degree (Environmental Sciences, Biology, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Planning, or Urban Planning)

*GIS and GPS experience preferred

*Management of complex EIRs including author of substantial technical sections

*U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S. without sponsorship

*Valid California Driver's license by hire date
*Working knowledge of the natural resources and planning/ permitting processes in northern California
