    HDR is seeking an Environmental Planner 2 to join our Washington Environmental Sciences & Planning team. The successful candidate will assist with permitting efforts for a variety of projects, including for large, complex private and/or public infrastructure improvement projects. The ideal candidate will have permitting experience leading or assisting local agencies in the Puget Sound region and statewide, as well as state and federal agencies for a variety of projects types, including water, power, transportation, solid waste, and/or industrial projects. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and collaborate with engineering, environmental, regulatory, and technical staff from local and regional offices.  We are looking for a candidate that is self-directed, team oriented, client focused, and flexible. 

    Primary Responsibilities

    In the role of Environmental Planner 2, we'll count on you to:

    • Collect project-related data, which may include research, interviews with government agencies and clients, map reviews, field investigations for wetlands, and land use.
    • Prepare, plan and analyze/review technical studies, permit applications, and similar reports/documents for local, Washington state, and Federal permitting efforts, including:
      • Local land use permits, including Shoreline Permits, Conditional Use Permits, Variances, Special Use Permits.
      • Local development permits, including Building Permits, Clear & Grade Permits, etc. 
      • Clean Water Act Permitting 
      • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Section 10 and 404 permits 
      • WDFW Hydraulic Project Approvals 
    • Conduct environmental impact assessments, including assistance with preparation of State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) Environmental Impact Statements and Checklists and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Environmental Impact Statements, Environmental Assessments and Categorical Exclusions.
    • Assist public and private clients with permit coordination, acquisition and compliance for wetland impacts and threatened/endangered species compliance.
    • Assist in preparation for and participation in public information meetings and hearings.
    • Perform other duties as needed

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Policy, or Planning or closely related field.
    • 5+ years environmental experience.
    • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving and research abilities.
    • Proficiency in Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 
    • Valid Washington State Driver’s license (occasional travel may be needed for project visits or in-person meetings). 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines and priorities. 
    • Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality, positive attitude, and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture are essential. 

    Preferred Qualifications

    • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification desired
    • Advanced degree is preferred.
    • Local candidates preferred.
