    Position: Seasonal Biological Technician, Cramer Fish Sciences Fish Ecology Lab (Portland, OR)

    Focus: Watershed and Fisheries Monitoring and Assessment

    Location: Ross Lake National Recreation Area, WA

    Approximate Dates: July 1st – October 14th
    *Exact start and finish dates will depend on field work needs

    Overview:
    Cramer Fish Sciences currently has an opening for a Seasonal Biological Technician. The focus of this seasonal assignment will be to conduct stream habitat surveys in the backcountry of Northwestern Washington forests in the upper Skagit River, and tributaries of Ross Lake using USFS Level II survey methods. Field work will be conducted in two-person teams on a 7-day-on, 5-day-off rotation. Lodging will be provided for the 7-day working period for portions of the fieldwork. However, a large portion of the work will involve backcountry camping. Field work will be supervised from the CFS Fish Ecology Lab in Portland, OR.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Perform stream habitat surveys following USFS Level II surveys for classifying and measuring attributes of channel units, large wood, gradient, substrate size, discharge and water quality parameters, and measurements of streamside vegetation conditions.
    • Provide support in collecting fish distribution data with a backpack electrofisher and collect fish tissues.
    • Conduct data collection, entry, organization, and QA/QC.
    • Prepare and organize the upkeep of all equipment and supplies needed for field work.
    • Hiking to and working in remote field sites in the North Cascades.
    • Ability to navigate in remote locations

    Personal Attributes:

    • Knowledge of fisheries, forestry, or wildlife studies.
    • Safety conscious in all aspects of field and office work.
    • Comfortable/enjoy spending extended periods of time in remote conditions, including backpacking and camping.
    • Ability to work independently or as part of a team with strong organization skills.
    • Approaches work from a high-energy, efficient standpoint.
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks with overlapping deadlines.
    • Ability to accurately interpret and follow established guidelines and protocols.
    • Ability to produce accurate, timely, and quality work products to meet project objectives.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with others to resolve problems.
    • Positive energy as evidenced in an optimistic outlook, a sense of humor, and a disposition to encourage.

    Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

    • Must be comfortable working in the aquatic environment including wading in rivers and streams.
    • Must be able to work effectively in inclement weather in remote locations for up to 7 days at a time.
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
    • Working irregular hours in various kinds of weather and potentially rugged terrain on occasion to meet project deadlines.
    • Ability to hike over irregular terrain to access sampling sites; some of this work will require extensive hiking.

    Education/Minimum Qualifications:

    • Undergraduate course work in Fisheries Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, physical or biological sciences, or related field.
    • Basic level proficiency with MS Office Suite.
    • Valid driver’s license.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology, aquatic or plant ecology, fish habitat requirements, fluvial geomorphology, and hydrology.
    • Experience backpacking/camping in remote locations.
    • Experience conducting stream habitat surveys.
    • Experience operating a backpack electrofisher and fish handling.
    • Experience operating power boats with outboard motors.
    • Experience using GPS.
    • First Aid certified (Wilderness First Responder certification preferred).
    • State issued boating license.

    Closing Date: May 1, or until filled.

    Pay Rate: $19-$22 per hour (DOE)
